What we offer
Our team provides a full spectrum of veterinary services tailored to your pet’s needs at every stage of life. Whether you’re here for a routine check-up, a surgical procedure, or support through a complex diagnosis, you’ll find thoughtful, thorough care grounded in medical excellence.
We prioritize clear communication, gentle handling, and practical solutions, always with your pet’s comfort and well-being at the center. From preventive medicine to advanced diagnostics, we’re here to help you navigate every step of your animal’s health journey.
Keeping pets healthy... before they’re ever sick.
Routine wellness care is the foundation of lifelong health. Our team works with you to create a personalized preventative care plan that matches your pet’s needs, lifestyle, and stage of life. Whether you’ve got a rambunctious puppy, a mellow senior, or anything in between, regular check-ups help catch concerns early, protect against disease, and keep your companion feeling their best.
- Puppy and Kitten care
We’re here to help with the whirlwind of that first year. These early visits cover everything from vaccines and nutrition to parasite prevention and socialization.
- Annual health exams
Yearly check-ins help us catch changes early, refresh your pet’s care plan, and chat through age- or breed-specific concerns.
- Routine diagnostics
Regular blood work, urine, and fecal testing give us a window into your pet’s health before symptoms show. Catching changes early lets us make proactive choices to keep your pet healthier, longer.
Transferring your pet's medical records
To ensure we have your pet’s complete medical history, we recommend that you contact your previous veterinarian directly to request the transfer of medical records to Fantastic Beasts Veterinary Services Nanaimo. This approach helps maintain professional relationships between veterinary practices and often results in faster, more complete record transfers. Your previous veterinarian can securely send records to us at nanaimo@fbvs.ca
Prescription
requests
To ensure that our veterinarians have sufficient time to review your pet’s medication history and fill their prescription, we kindly ask that you provide us with 48 business hours advance notice when requesting prescription refills. Compounded or special-order prescriptions require ten days’ advance notice. Please call us during business hours with your prescription request and ensure that you have the medication name, strength and dose and instructions available. All patients must be examined at least once per year to maintain ongoing prescription medications.

Surgical Services
SPAY AND NEUTER
Spaying or neutering is often the first major health decision you’ll make for your pet. These routine procedures help prevent unwanted litters and support long-term health.
Every surgical patient goes home with pain medication and a recovery cone to protect their incision. Healing typically takes about two weeks, and your pet will need to take it easy during this time. Most pets bounce back within a few days and are back to themselves quickly.
DENTAL COHAT
What is a Dental “C.O.H.A.T.”?
A Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment & Treatment
Oral health is a major part of overall health. Our dental COHAT service includes a thorough oral exam, dental X-rays, and full cleaning under general anesthesia. This includes scaling and polishing, individual tooth assessment, and intraoral X-rays to look below the gumline, and extractions (if needed).
Because pets can’t sit still for a deep cleaning, anesthesia is essential to safely and properly clean below the gumline and fully assess each tooth. You’ll receive a detailed dental report after the procedure, and we’ll walk you through any findings and home care recommendations.
Unwell & Medical Care
Illness, Injury, or Concern
Whether it’s a sudden change in behaviour or a long-standing concern, we’re here to help. Our medical exams are designed to get to the root of the issue, without rushing the process. Our 45 minutes appointments allow time for a full exam, diagnostics, and a treatment plan that works for both you and your pet.
Long-term Treatment
From arthritis to allergies, thyroid issues to diabetes, we provide ongoing care for pets with long-term medical needs. Our team works closely with families to monitor symptoms, adjust medications, and build treatment plans that prioritize comfort, quality of life, and realistic routines at home.
Quality of Life
Knowing when it’s time to say goodbye is one of the hardest parts of loving an animal. We offer gentle, supportive guidance when you’re facing end-of-life decisions. Whether you need help recognizing signs of suffering or just want to talk through what’s next, we can help make this difficult time as manageable and as free of regrets as possible.

Acute & Urgent Care
If your pet is feeling unwell and you’re a client of Fantastic Beasts Nanaimo, give us a call. We’ll talk you through next steps and help you decide if an urgent appointment is needed.
We’re working toward expanding our urgent care services to include patients from outside our clinic family. At this time, we have a limited number of urgent care appointments available each day. These are reserved for time-sensitive or potentially life-threatening situations.
Please call ahead as walk-ins cannot always be accommodated. Our team will help assess whether your pet needs to be seen right away or can wait for a scheduled visit.
Why we don't offer payment plans
We are a small, local business, fully financed by our two owners. We are a medical facility, not a financial institution, and operating under a “buy now, pay later” model presents significant legal and financial risks that threaten our ability to remain open and continue providing care to our patients.
The primary reasons for this policy include:
- Financial Risk & Non-Payment: Studies show that up to 9 out of 10 people on payment plans never finish paying their bills. Unlike a car or a home, a pet cannot be used as collateral to recover costs.
- High Overhead: Veterinary medicine is an incredibly high-overhead business. We must pay for expensive medical equipment, supplies, and staff salaries immediately. When clients don’t pay their bills, the practice owners are forced to personally absorb those thousands of dollars.
- Operational Costs: Managing debt requires dedicated staff to act as bill collectors, track payments, and pursue legal action in small claims court. We prefer to focus on animal care rather than administrative collections.
- Legal Regulations: Providing credit is a regulated financial service. We do not have the legal licensing or infrastructure required to act as a lender.
